Wii blamed in death of 3 year old

Has anyone seen this?

A 3-year-old girl has accidentally shot and killed herself after allegedly mistaking a loaded pistol for a Wii controller.

The girl’s stepfather reportedly he went out to investigate what he thought to be a trespasser on his Tennessee property, taking with him his semi-automatic pistol. Another version of events has him going out to scare away dogs.

When he returned, he claims he left the loaded gun on a living room table. His step-daughter is said to have subsequently mistook the weapon for a Wii controller and accidentally shot herself in the abdomen. The wound proved fatal and she was pronounced dead at hospital.

Media reports stress that “the game’s controller was shaped like a gun that looked very similar to the real handgun.”

Police are said to be investigating but have not filed any charges as a result of the incident.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this case is how easily mentioning video games in conjunction with a child’s death apparently deflects all media attention away from the stepfather’s decision to leave a loaded pistol within reach of an unsupervised 3-year-old child.

Dont blame the Wii, blame the stupid dad who left a freakin loaded gun on the table!

No, it's the wii and the dad's fault.

It's the dad's fault because he freakin' left a LOADED gun on the table! What the hell is wrong with him. .__.

It's the wii's fault for making their controller look like a real gun. They should make it look less of a gun...use a different color and design, just as long as it doesn't look like a handgun. From the looks of it, their controller looks like a Beretta 9mm

I personally cannot find that particular wii gun when I searched for it. I read that it is not produced by Nintendo but I wanted to see a different picture of it. I didnt look that hard, but still could not find it.

hah! found some info on it!

The Wii accessory in question is a Wii Semi-Auto Pistol, which Kotaku says is manufactured by the Chinese company HAIHONGCHANG Electronics. The HAIHONGCHANG is black and quite realistic looking and was most likely illegally imported. Section 4, Title 15 of the Federal Energy Management Improvement Act of 1988 dictates that all toy guns transported or imported within the U.S. must feature a “blaze orange” (or brighter) marking on the muzzle of any toy gun.

Girl's Death Linked to Realistic Gun-Shaped Wii Controller
Austin MacKenzie posted on 9 March 2010 8:00 pm
Filed under: austin mackenzie, death, gun, wii controller

We wondered how a real gun was mistaken for a Wii gun, and with new information on the tragic death of a three-year-old girl, that question has been answered.

Yesterday, The Escapist reported that a young girl had mistaken a gun for a Wii controller. Normally, a Wii controller, even a Wii gun controller, looks nothing like a real gun, but here, that was not the case.

Take a look at the picture here. The gun shown on top is an actual Smith & Wesson semi-automatic pistol. The gun shown on the bottom is a Wii peripheral known as WiiAuto Pistol, a realistic gun-like Wii attachment manufactured by Chinese company HAIHONGCHANG Electronics Company. The peripheral is widely available on eBay, and was in possession of the family.

The girl, identified as Cheyenne Alexis McKeehan, was playing in the living room a few feet away from her mother, who was on the computer. The night before, her step-father had left the gun on an end-table, having thought he heard intruders. Cheyenne, mistaking the real gun for the controller, picked it up and shot herself.

The police have filed no charges, but this does bring the situation into further light. It begs the question, why would you leave an unsecured weapon in reach of your daughter when she is already used to seeing such a thing as a toy? Furthermore, the parents specifically purchased a realistic gun peripheral, and then left a real gun well within reach. This tragedy could have been averted. If nothing else, this will hopefully be a lesson to other gun-owning households on keeping their guns out of reach, especially if their young children view them as toys.

Here is the actual gun

I wanna know why gun owners feel it necessary to buy their kids gun related toys in the first place...unless its a premeditated plan to blame the toy in the event of their inevitably getting someone shot.

Jesse, it's all just responsibility issues. My grampa has a handgun, in fact he has four higher caliber guns inside the house, but I don't see anyone in my family getting killed because of it because he knows how dangerous guns are. So he keeps it hidden inside his gun cabinet under lock and key.

I also have a handgun (yes, here, a 17-year old can have a handgun.) in my room but I don't see my youngest cousin shooting herself with it because I also lock it inside my cabinet, unloaded all the bullets and locked it on safe.

THE GUY in the other news however, left his gun on a table, where ANYONE can get it, even his three-year-old kid. That jackass has no idea how dangerous a gun can be.

And another thing, he's also a jackass for buying his THREE-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER a wii handgun controller that looks like the real thing! I mean, I understand if he bought that for his 13-year old daughter or son, at least they know what the controller really is, but a three year old?! C'mon, even I know that's the worst thing to buy for a girl that young.

I also blame the law for not putting that guy in jail. Or at least strip him of his firearms license for irresponsible use of weapons.

No contest. The step dad's fault. A child is curious by nature. The chances of her not even touching the gun and randomly doing things with it is less likely than the chance of her firing one. He left the gun out in the open and the worst thing is that he left it fully loaded.

But this would really need to shed a light. People prefer if they held realistic guns while playing a game. It's the wants of certain people which causes the production. So in modernization...should we expect more of this? The government takes away toy guns that look realistic to avoid the happening of a "fake-real" sitaution. (For Example, guy gets out "toy gun" and threatens someone to give them their wallet/money/anything valuable. Remember that it looks realistic so most people will think that it is real without any question.) Should they take this gun like console and ban its distribution too?

*I won't even bother posting the continuation to this about the fact thatit is her step father who left the gun out. It may be a "planned" thing but I will just sotp there. Talking about murders give me the creeps. And I'M LITERALLY SHAKING AS I AM TYPING THIS.
